British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
