A person who contaminated candy with sleeping medication and gave them to minors at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offences against two children both nine and 10.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he denied one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

'Treat game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, described the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She stated his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a summer program which he ran.

Ruben played a "candy game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior stated, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the defendant had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and minors had previously become sick the following morning.

She explained the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had worries in recently.

The prosecutor stated further: "Recently" his family member had suspicions about the activities, for good reason.

"They chose" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC stated materials including infant oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the authorities about his suspicions.

She said Ruben went on to conduct the "sweet game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was examining the police response of the incident.

Mrs Prior said the children were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the stepson called the authorities once more.

She explained Ruben then played the "treat game" in a room of five minors.
