We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.
An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
