Why this Democratic Party Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This decision from the DNC to block the release of its own post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race seems shocking but to be expected. Averse to hard truths, the party's leadership apparatus behaves closer to a PR firm rather than a political organization committed to building a volunteer base for winning elections.

A Culture That Avoids Dissent

Hesitant to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has continued under the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Making public the findings would have indicated whether party leaders truly desire to promote open debate regarding the strategic failures that enabled Donald Trump to return to the White House. Instead, the leadership is moving forward as if there are no lessons to understand following the tragic debacle of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," an explanation that has been offered for withholding the report.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Would Have Examined

An autopsy report worth its salt would confront key points of failure. This encompasses:

  • Voter Disengagement: Failing to retain of a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive in the close 2024 election.
  • The Choice to Run: The unwavering decision of a party leader to stay in the race, alongside a very late withdrawal, has been criticized as robbing the party's base of open primaries.
  • Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: Amid inflation, the electoral effort is criticized for accommodating corporate donors' interests and not managing to challenge the effects of big business.
  • The Foreign Policy Factor: The refusal to reconsider an approach on a major international conflict allegedly caused losing many voters, notably with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • Eroding Young Voter Support: Research indicates a significant decline of Democratic support among young voters.

A History Avoiding Accountability

This refusal fits a recurring tendency of evading difficult realities. This mirrors an episode in which the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Washington went along with a sitting president's determination to seeking another term right up until a catastrophic televised debate compelled an exit.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of the electorate had been repeatedly informing pollsters that they did not want the incumbent to run again.

Financial Concerns

A substantive report might also examine questions about campaign spending, such as the amounts went to insider consultants and media firms over the course of a campaign which expended an enormous war chest over a few months.

A Underlying Implication

At its core, the blockage surrounding this report highlights an allegiance toward the existing power structure that oversaw a disastrous national race. The message to ordinary supporters – including millions of small donors – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to understand the lessons the insiders claim to have learned based on hundreds of interviews compiled from extensive interviews.

An organization incapable to critically review its own failings finds it difficult to climb out of the cycle that ended up being so helpful to their opponents.
